Training with the Dunk Master

I'm back on track with Gil Thomas the Dunk Master. I gave working out everything I got last week. I trained on 10+ separate occasions last week. I threw up once again in one of the workouts. Right after I drank my protein shake after the workout, I threw it back up. ahhh, drank it only to lose it. The results are unbelievable. My body is responding to the training. My legs feel alive.

I squatted 260 for about 3 reps. Coach is trying to prepare me to become a track and field high jumper. So for now, train hard and get ready for the season.

"You ready to shock the world?" - Gil Thomas

On the side note
Looking at the archives and found some old quotes I use to really love.

"Life isn't a sprint, it's a marathon."
"The truth is.. life isn't fair, and if you expect it to be then you're going to be disappointed." -Rich Decoudres
"I'm both happy and sad.. Still trying to figure out how that can be."
"A life without conflict or problems, just love. As for those that accept simplicity. Reveling in the present moment."
"The time of your life is now.. it's not when you become rich and successful, it's not when you get that new car, all you have is right now.. you'll never get back another minute of your time. Have the time of your life everyday, if you don't you're going to miss out on experiences you should be having, experiences you desire. You are where you are in life and nowhere else so embrace it." -David
Whoever is grinding out there, especially the people with doubters. Don't let them hold you down. It doesn't matter what they say. Do what you love and love what you do. Be honest to yourself, and you will hardly do wrong.

A Weekend of Romance

In life, things could hit you one after another. Sometimes I feel like I need a pause button in life, but the world moves too fast; it rather pass by. At these times, everything becomes difficult and you begin to wonder how much longer can you keep up with this fast paced world. All usually works out. Things got hectic for me, my work became difficult and it got hard to keep up with my training.

Even with all this adversity, the people in my life make it all worth the while. I really have amazing people in my life, my friends, my family, Coach Gil, my girlfriend.
This weekend was filled with romance. We went to Disneyland on Friday and I planned a prom for the two of us today and man was it a blast. Nothing brings you back from being overwhelmed as much as joy and love. Moments like this and the people in my life give me the strength to gladly face the obstacles in life. I'm caught up and really enjoying life. Now it's time to get back to working out! Let's get it!

Supercat/Vertical Booster

The guy in the black shorts is a high jumper for track and field. He's Asian and only 5'9 yet he could dunk easy. He has mad ups!

Supercat
Check it out. The Supercat is one of the exercise machines I have been using to increase my vertical leap. This is the machine that had me throwing up 2 days a week. ahhh, it doesn't look like much but this thing is intense! I feel the impact and intensity on my CNS right after I get off the machine. The super cat allows for building strength while allowing yourself to utilize that strength to create explosiveness. For the first two weeks using it as part of my workout program with Gil, I was so sore from using it; it was tough to get in and out of my car. In my training experience, there's nothing like the Supercat except for maybe the Vertical Booster.

The Vertical Booster
I would describe the Vertical Booster as the portable affordable version of the Supercat. The innovative workout equipment was invented by Gil himself. The Vertical Booster enables you to do the same exercises that you would do with the Supercat along with similar intensity that comes with the Supercat. I will have some pictures soon of me using the Vertical Booster to show you guys what it looks like.

Take care.

Food for thought

Along your path to success, you will always face adversity. Without perseverance and a will to face each one of these obstacles your journey may come to an end. Though, if you have the strength and persistence to go through these challenges, these detours, these passionate emotions than you will be able to delve deeply to a place not many have been. As you create your own path; leave a trail for others to follow.

I choose a life that encourages growth of the mind, body and human spirit. And one day I hope I may encourage people to grow with me.

Just a little venting through my mind, the past couple of weeks have been rough, as an athlete this will come. There are tons of factors that can effect the flow of things, maybe outside sources will have a toll on your willingness to keep moving forward. But, at the end of the day; hold on to that vision you want to create and make it a reality.

Take Care.

Recap of Month 1

March 8 - April 19th

It's been a month since I started training with the Dunkmaster. I haven't been training in a while. After April 8th, I pretty much have been resting up until the 20th when I started training again.

After the 1 month mark, my schedule has been crazy so it has been hard to get my workouts in which was fine because the high intense type of workouts that Gil had me do required a rest period. Man, it felt good allowing myself to recover because my legs have been dead for some time.

The result of resting was unreal. My legs felt springy, explosive and my overall athleticism spiked tremendously. It felt as if the potential of my athleticism was limitless.

I hit the courts, and when I jumped, I swear I got so high.. I touched the rim; I got over the rim! "WOOOO!" haha, I celebrated in triumph.

Man, my standing reach is 7'6. I got over the 10 foot rim a little bit. That's a 30 inch vertical standing.. no step, not running but standing. Legit.

Check it out.
(March 8)  - SVJ 25 Inches
(April 18) - SVJ 30 Inches

Hitting the 30 inch mark, wow.. it felt like it would take forever, it's only been 1 month.. I can't express it strongly enough how astonished I am.

Pictures + Videos coming soon. Any Advice, questions or comments would be appreciated.

Weeks 2 & 3

April 2, 2012

Three weeks have passed since I started working out with Vertical Jump trainer Gil Thomas.  It's been a while since I have posted in here, things have gotten busy in my schedule but I'll be more frequent with my updates.

Week 2: In ours workouts, Gil uses state of the art equipment along with his knowledge in vertical jump training to create an incredibly productive workout. In the first two workouts of my second week with coach Gil, throwing up was the result of the highly intense workout Gil had me do. The SuperCat and the Vertical Booster are the main workout equipment Coach Gil uses, man those things are no joke! (*Check out the next post to read about it) He then explained to me that my body was slow at removing the lactic acid produced in my body leading to my nervous system running wild because of the impact of the workout. "You're out of shape, we got to build up your anaerobic system." As a result, he wrote up an extra workout plan to build up my anaerobic system and also tweaked my workout a bit to fit where I'm at.

Week 3: This week I've met a few other clients that Coach Gil also trains. These guys are really inspiring to me, these guys got hops! One of these guys is a 6'2 Asian Sophomore high school basketball player, the guy pulled off a 360 dunk the other day. Who said Asian guys can't jump? There was another Asian guy at my height 5'9 dunking with ease that participates in the high jump at his high school. He told me that before he started working out with Gil he could hardly touch the rim.
Another one of Gil's client is a 5'6 College basketball player. This guy is an incredible athlete, it's hard to believe but this guy could dunk with two hands, shoot he could even do a windmill.

Every week, every workout as I continue training I could tell my body is becoming more powerful and that the hard work is paying off. After week 2, with a running jump I was grabbing the rim with ease. With a 1 step I was pulling down the rim. I was like Whoa. Lol. Gil told me he noticed that I'm already jumping higher than when I first started training with him. The results are incredible. I mean, I've done VJB and TVP; and the results I got from those do not compare to the results I'm getting from working out with Gil. The guy really knows his stuff. Improving the athleticism of his clients is Coach Gil's passion. Not only does he still continue to study the science of athletic training, he trains clients day in and day out constantly.. the results never fail. And that's what makes him the best.

A Little Background History

Before I started working out with Gil, I have done numerous workout programs.

One of those programs is Vertical jump Bible by Kelly Baggett.
I did this vertical leap program for 6 months with a lot of determination and hope. This was when I was still in my high school years when I was about 16. My squat went up drastically from 155 to 245. But I was really disappointed because my verticall leap only went from 19 inches to 22 in those grinding 6 months. I would still recommend Kelly over most of the internet vertical jump gurus because he is a certified trainer and the other guys are usually just great marketers.

6 months = 3 inch vertical gain  19 to 22 inches (Standing)

Another one is The Vertical Jump Project by Luke Lowrey
Don't be fooled. This program looks super fancy and Luke Lowrey promises you a bunch of things he can't live up to. It's just lies upon lies. His advertisement with a Powerpoint screen and him talking seems nice and dandy but trust me it has no substance. Like a guy saying whatever it takes to get in a girl's pants, Luke is saying whatever it takes for him to get in your wallet. I've done this program for four weeks gained little to no success with this. The workout program consists of a 60 to 90 minutes of working out and 3 hours of recovery after the workout. Don't trust these guys with your card number. They will charge you for stuff you didn't order and they won't refund you. They have no ethical integrity.

1 month = Little to no vertical gain

I've been only working with Gil Thomas for about a week now. The progress I got in this one week is drastic compared to the results I've got from the past programs I've done. I'm looking forward to keep striving and going on with this training. I'm excited for each and every workout.

Stick around =)

Quick Update

Rain in Southern California has caused me to skip out on a couple of workouts. Finally, we got some rain; we're behind on rainfall this year. It's looking like we got La Nina weather out there.

I had a three day rest period, my body feels amazing. There's a difference in the way my legs feel; the strength is there and I got a nice little springy feeling in my legs. =)  My body is looking a lot more defined.. my legs got bigger, my chest and etc.

I have never had such results with any other kind of workout program I've ever done. In just one week? These results are phenomenal and I still haven't got to the meat and bones of the program.

My first week with the Dunk Master

March 8-15, 2012

Meeting Coach Gil has been a great experience. He's a real great guy, real caring/authentic and he's really easy to talk to. The way he had me approach the workout and the type of exercises he had me doing were beyond anything I have ever experienced. Coach Gil really knows his stuff; the dude is the real deal.

When I first met up with Coach Gil, he was training 3 guys. One of the guys is great basketball player at his high school. And the other two guys were professional basketball players who play overseas. Upon arriving, Gil had me warm up to get ready for my workout. I didn't know what to expect.

The intensity of the workout was like nothing I've ever experienced in training. After about a few sets or about 10 to 15 minutes I was feeling the shock on my CNS and I was feeling exhausted. Good thing I was sitting next to dirt because before I knew it I was throwing up! LOL. Man, that ends my streak of 5 years with out vomiting.

My body was feeling extremely sore this entire week. Gil had some homework exercises for me to do at home and gave me a nutrition guideline to follow. For about the first 5 days of this week I was having trouble sitting down.. getting out of my car.. walking.. these workouts were intense! I've noticed that I'm faster than when I started working out with Gil. Imagine when I'm fully recovered, man I'm going to be explosive!

Stay Tune ! =)

The Beginning of Something New

I go by the name of Johnny. This journal is about my journey to dunk a basketball and beyond. It's a lot of guys dream to dribble the ball down the court and be able to throw down a thunderous jam. I know a lot of guys have went online and searched for a vertical jump program to fulfill that dream or to raise their athletic ability only to end up feeling disappointed about the results they got from the program. The promises from the so-called "vertical jump" gurus turned out to be false hype with no substance.

Hey, I know how you feel.. trust me I've been there. I've been on this road since the age of 17 and now I'm 19. After many failures/minimal results and wasted money; it left me feeling like there was nothing out there that worked, it made me lose hope.

I lost hope in my athletic dreams but it has been ignited once again. A new chapter has began in my journey and it has been a rejuvenating experience. I found a real vertical jump trainer, not only a real one but the one and only "Dunk Master." The man known as the "Dunk Master" is Gil Thomas, he has starred in an interview on CBS where Bill Whitaker interviewed him about his ability to get people to dunk.

On this blog, you will hear about my training with Dunk Master Gil Thomas and the results I get; I hope to shed some light on the vertical jumping world through this blog.

I'm nothing amazing athletically quite yet.
At 5'9, I weigh 145
My standing vertical leap is 25 inches, My running vertical leap is 30 inches.
And I'm also Asian. Gil has quite a project on his hands.
Gil told me it doesn't matter if you're Asian or white.. or 5'5 he can get you to dunk. I strongly believe in him.
